WEEK 2 – Spring 2026

Spring 2026
1. WEEK 1 – Spring 2026
2. WEEK 2 – Spring 2026

ICE BREAKER:

What is something, or someone, you go to in order to make you happy when you’re in a bad mood?

SCRIPTURE:

22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
James 1:2-18 NIV

James, a servant of God and of the Lord Jesus Christ,

To the twelve tribes scattered among the nations: Greetings.

Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you. But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.

Believers in humble circumstances ought to take pride in their high position. 10 But the rich should take pride in their humiliation—since they will pass away like a wild flower. 11 For the sun rises with scorching heat and withers the plant; its blossom falls and its beauty is destroyed. In the same way, the rich will fade away even while they go about their business.

12 Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him.

13 When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone; 14 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. 15 Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.

16 Don’t be deceived, my dear brothers and sisters. 17 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. 18 He chose to give us birth through the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of all he created.

UNdiscipling joy - The Happiness Trap

Lie #1: Joy comes from circumstances.

  • Truth: Joy comes from knowing God is steady even when life is not.

Lie #2: Joy comes from achieving the life you imagined.

  • Truth: Joy comes from receiving the life Christ already secured.

Lie #3: Joy comes from avoiding pain.

  • Truth: Joy grows when we trust God in the middle of difficulty.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:

  • Which of the three lies have most shaped the way you think about joy: circumstances, achievement, or comfort? Where do you see that influence showing up in your daily decisions?
  • When life does not go the way you planned, what is your default reaction? What does that reveal about where you have been looking for happiness instead of joy?
  • How does understanding that joy is rooted in God’s character, not your circumstances change the way you view current challenges or frustrations in your life?
  • Hebrews 12:2 says Jesus endured the cross “for the joy set before him.” What does that teach us about the relationship between purpose and joy? Where might God be inviting you to trust him even when something feels difficult?
  • Where might the world be quietly discipling you into believing that control leads to peace? What would it look like to surrender that area to God and trust that his purposes are better than your ability to
    manage outcomes?

Challenge

  • What is one situation in your life right now where you have been postponing joy until circumstances improve, and how can you intentionally choose joy this week by trusting God’s purpose even before the situation changes?
