FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
WHAT IS A LIFE GROUP?
Life Groups are about helping you grow in faith and friendship. Whether you have been following Jesus for 10 years or only 10 minutes, we believe there is a group of friends for you in a life group. We have men’s, women’s and coed groups meeting weekly either in person or online. HOW DO I CHOOSE A GROUP?
Life Groups are about growing in faith and friendship, so choosing a group by Stage of Life and Gender, can help you make a decision. These headings are meant to assist you in finding a group of people in a similar life stage in a meeting style accessible to you. Keep in mind, you may fit into more than one Stage of Life, so take a look at all the groups that may apply to you and are accessible to you based on Meeting Location and/or Day of the Week. Some groups have a description designed to give you an idea of the group. Read the descriptions for a fuller picture of each group to help you decide on one for you.
WHEN CAN I SIGN UP FOR A LIFE GROUP?
Our Life Groups meet for 7-10 week semesters in the Fall, Winter and Spring. Before each Life Group semester begins there are several ways to sign up for a group: on our website, on our mobile app, and at our weekend services.
- During the sign-up season, Life Group leaders and volunteers are available at our weekend services at the sign-up booths in the lobby to help you choose a group and answer any questions.
- Find a Life Group near you or one that meets online using our Life Groups search on Church Center: SIGN UP HERE
- Talk to someone you know who leads a Life Group and ask if their group is open to new members.
- We also offer Growth Track which runs for 3 sessions every month and is a great introduction to groups. These groups are designed for people new to Freedom Church or new to faith who would like to find out the purpose of Jesus, the purpose of the church and your unique purpose.
WHEN AND WHERE DO THEY MEET?
Life Groups meet on every day of the week throughout Los Angeles or online. We have several different meeting locations for groups:
- Home Groups – Groups that meet in homes, backyards or coffee shops
- Freedom Center – Groups that meet at the Freedom Center in Chatsworth
- Online Groups – Groups that meet over Zoom or Google Meets
- Church Online Groups – Groups for our Church Online community
Each Life Group session lasts 7 to 10 weeks. We have Fall, Winter & Spring sessions. At the end of each session, you will have the choice of staying in the same group, trying a new group or even taking a break. Most groups stay together throughout the entire year. Life Groups do not meet in the Summer.
WHAT IS THE REQUIRED COMMITMENT?
Joining a Life Group is an 7-10 week commitment to attend weekly meetings and participate in group discussion. This commitment is the key to a strong Life Group. If you sign up for a group and decide it’s not a good fit for you, let us know in the first few weeks and we’d love to help you find another one!
WHAT WILL WE DISCUSS?
- Every type of life group is about developing relationships and having conversations that help people grow in their faith. Most Life Groups are “sermon-based” Life Groups, which are built on the recent sermon where in meetings the group will discuss how the weekend’s message applies in our daily life. Each week there will be a series of Bible passages and questions on the group guide that the entire group can read together. All you need to do before the life group is watch the sermon or the recap video on our group guide. Some groups follow a separate meeting structure, which is denoted in the title, such as a Challenge or Recovery group. Some of these groups have a specific curriculum, study or material-cost included, which will be specified in the title or description. Special-interest groups can be anything from book clubs, activity or sports, and bible studies. Our 4 types of life groups are:
- Sermon-based groups: Groups that meet to discuss the message from weekend service, read the Bible and apply it to daily life (best for your first time in life group)
- Recovery groups: Support groups for anyone struggling with hurt, pain or addiction of any kind
- Challenge groups: Higher commitment groups with a daily reading plan, videos, life journaling and spiritual disciplines using the UNComplicated app ($9.99/month app subscription cost)
Special-interest groups: Small groups with unique topics and themes such as Bible study, activity groups, and book clubs.
WHAT ABOUT CHILDCARE?
We leave it up to each family to work out their own childcare for groups meeting in homes, coffee shops or online. Sometimes it works best for families to share a sitter or to swap childcare with another family whose Life Group meets on a different evening. Childcare is available at no cost during Life Groups that happen at the Freedom Center on specific nights of the week. Browse groups with childcare HERE.
IS IT OKAY TO “SHOP AROUND”?
Absolutely! It’s understandable to want to find people you feel comfortable opening up to and developing friendships with. That being said, if you’ve joined a Life Group and aren’t sure if it’s the right fit for you, don’t give up. Keep in mind that there’s no such thing as a perfect Life Group because there are no perfect people. Remember to have grace and patience during the process. If it’s clear that this group isn’t the best fit for you, though, give another group a try.
ARE THERE GROUPS FOR MIDDLE SCHOOLERS AND TEENAGERS?
Yes, our Youth ministry offers small groups for students in middle school and high school. Explore our Youth groups HERE. For more information about Youth groups, please contact Kenny at kenny@freedom.church.
ARE THERE GROUPS ACROSS THE COUNTRY?
We have groups for our church online community that live across the country. Some groups meet only online for anyone nationwide, and some meet online and in person occasionally for our Church Online Community in South LA. Explore Church Online groups.HERE
WHAT IF THERE ISN’T A GROUP FOR WHAT I'M LOOKING FOR?
This might be a sign that God is calling you to start a group! If God’s placed a certain passion or calling within you, He might want you to take a step of faith and launch a Life Group around it. You won’t have to do this alone, though. Your Life Groups team is here to support you every step of the way.
