LIFE GROUPS – WEEK 6

FULL SERMON – 33 MINUTES

ICE BREAKER:

What’s something that you’ve done that was hard but helped you grow?

SCRIPTURE:

Luke 7:19-28 NKJV

18 John’s disciples told him about all these things. Calling two of them, 19 he sent them to the Lord to ask, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?”

20 When the men came to Jesus, they said, “John the Baptist sent us to you to ask, ‘Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else?’”

21 At that very time Jesus cured many who had diseases, sicknesses and evil spirits, and gave sight to many who were blind. 22 So he replied to the messengers, “Go back and report to John what you have seen and heard: The blind receive sight, the lame walk, those who have leprosy are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, and the good news is proclaimed to the poor. 23 Blessed is anyone who does not stumble on account of me.”

24 After John’s messengers left, Jesus began to speak to the crowd about John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed swayed by the wind? 25 If not, what did you go out to see? A man dressed in fine clothes? No, those who wear expensive clothes and indulge in luxury are in palaces. 26 But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 27 This is the one about whom it is written:

“‘I will send my messenger ahead of you,
who will prepare your way before you.’

28 I tell you, among those born of women there is no one greater than John; yet the one who is least in the kingdom of God is greater than he.”

KEEP IT UNCOMPLICATED:

Read Luke 7:19-28 together and share observations.

Also read 1 Peter 1:6-7 NKJV:

In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, 7 that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ

Observation Questions

  • In Luke 7, how does Jesus respond to John’s doubts and questions?
  • What kind of evidence does Jesus point to when John’s disciples come to ask if He’s really the Messiah?
  • In 1 Peter 1:6–7, what might be the purpose of our struggles?

Understanding Questions

  • How do unmet expectations about God’s timing or methods cause faith to waver?
  • Pastor Keith explained that refining faith comparable to smelting metal. What does that process teach us about God’s work in our hearts?

Application Questions

  • What’s an area in your life right now where your faith feels “tested by fire”?
  • When has God’s plan looked different than what you expected, and what did you learn through that?
  • When you have doubts, what would it look like to bring them to Jesus honestly?

Reflection & Prayer

Pray together for:

  • The courage to bring our disappointment and confusion to God instead of withdrawing from Him.

  • The strength to let God refine and strengthen our faith through trials rather than remove us from them.

  • The humility to embrace imperfect but genuine faith, like the father who cried out, “Lord, I believe; help my unbelief.” (Mark 9:24)

  • The grace to respond to adversity with worship, perseverance, and trust instead of offense or discouragement.
