ICE BREAKER: What is something, or someone, you go to in order to make you…

WEEK 3 – Spring 2026
LIFE GROUPS – WEEK 3
ICE BREAKER:
Are you more of a “plan everything out” person or a “go with the flow” person?
SCRIPTURE:
Proverbs 3:1-6 NIV
My son, do not forget my teaching, but keep my commands in your heart,
2 for they will prolong your life many years and bring you peace and prosperity.
3 Let love and faithfulness never leave you; bind them around your neck,
write them on the tablet of your heart.
4 Then you will win favor and a good name in the sight of God and man.
5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.
Isaiah 26:3 NIV
“You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.”
Philippians 4:4-7 NIV
4 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
John 14:27 NIV
“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”
John 16:33 NIV
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
UNDISCIPLING Peace - THE ILLUSION OF CONTROL
Lie #1: Peace comes from controlling circumstances.
- Truth: Peace comes from trusting God, not controlling outcomes.
Lie #2: Peace comes from eliminating problems.
- Truth: Peace comes from God’s presence, not a problem-free life.
Lie #3: Peace comes from being a control freak.
- Truth: Peace comes from being a surrender freak.
DISCUSSION QUESTIONS:
-
What is one area of your life that you are currently trying to control that may be robbing you of peace?
-
Which of these six areas do you struggle with the most: the future, other people, reputation, outcomes, comfort, or safety?
-
Why do you think the world constantly pushes us toward control instead of trust?
-
How might your life look different if you truly surrendered one of these areas to God?
Challenge
-
This week, identify one area where you have been trying to maintain control. Bring it before God in prayer and intentionally surrender it to him. Instead of asking, “How can I control this situation?” begin asking, “How can I trust God with this today?”
