Essential 4: New Identity in Christ
DISCUSSION:
– Share a funny time when you got in trouble as a kid, but denied it or tried to hide it.
– Share your notes from the teaching, what impacted you? Was there a moment you sensed the Holy Spirit?
SCRIPTURE
Take Turns Reading Out Loud and Sharing Observations
Ephesians 2:1 – 5
Once you were dead because of your disobedience and your many sins. 2 You used to live in sin, just like the rest of the world, obeying the devil—the commander of the powers in the unseen world.[a] He is the spirit at work in the hearts of those who refuse to obey God. 3 All of us used to live that way, following the passionate desires and inclinations of our sinful nature. By our very nature we were subject to God’s anger, just like everyone else.4 But God is so rich in mercy, and he loved us so much, 5 that even though we were dead because of our sins, he gave us life when he raised Christ from the dead.
Colossians 3:3-4
For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory.
2 Cor. 5:17
This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!
Romans 8:14-17
For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. 15 The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship.[ And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” 16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17 Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.
2 Corinthians 5:21
God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
UNcomplicate it:
Observation Questions:
– What do you observe about the encounter between Jesus and the Samaritan woman in John 4?
– What do you observe about the scriptures above? (Take turns reading out loud and sharing insights. The exercise is meant to discuss the obvious.)
UNcomplicate it:
– Explain our “new identity in Christ” in your own words and in the most UNcomplicated way possible.
– Pastor Justice said, “We have to own it before we offer it.” Share an area of your life that you have had success owning it and offering it. This means recognizing your sin, repenting of it and moving forward.
Break in groups for prayer(often times groups are helpful)
WARNING: this next question requires major humility. Is there a struggle in your life that you are reluctant to “own it” but but you know it is the key to you moving forward? How can you offer it to God?
Before Next Week:
– Pick someone to share next week from their Life Journal to kick off the group discussion.
– Ask someone volunteer their 4 minutes testimony next week
– Pray for one another in groups

Understanding Questions:
– How does revelation of The Three-Person God affect the way a person sees God?
